Sanghata’s Role

Since monastics in this tradition don’t use money, Sanghata acts as the financial steward for the Pacific Hermitage sangha, receiving donations from the community and paying expenses as needed. Sanghata is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt non-profit corporation registered in the state of Oregon. All offerings to Sanghata are tax exempt.

The Pacific Hermitage’s Finances

In keeping with the tradition’s emphasis on simplicity, the Hermitage runs on a lean budget, with baseline expenses for property upkeep and care of the monastics under $40,000 in most years. Thanks to the generosity of donors around the world, contributions above this base have allowed for the steady development of the property. A new abbot’s residence was built in 2023, and design work is underway for a facility for the care of elderly monastics.
